How To Choose A Good Air Compressor

June 10th, 2009

Portable air compressors come in a number of different types and sizes.  The type of air compressor one uses depends on the power needed to drive the power tools you use.  Your tools should list power requirements on them.  Follow these recommendations and be sure to get an air compressor that can run your most powerful tool. Don’t end up with a cheap air compressor that doesn’t work for you.

When working with an compressor it is important to take all safety precautions into consideration.  Wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, and other protective clothing, including safety goggles.  Wear heavy boots or steel-toe work boots when working with heavy duty tools.

The Portable rotary screw compressor is probably the most common type of portable air compressor.   Their compressor range is from 65 to 1600 cubic feet per minute, with pressure rating of 100 to 350 pounds per square inch. So, first determine which kinds of tools you use. For example, a professional builder would need 185 CFM.  This would enable him to run two power tools consecutively and use both light weight and heavy duty tools.

Truck mounted compressors are easy to use space savers.  They are very popular because they can be mounted in the bed of a truck or under the hood.  They use the engine of the truck for power.  The only consideration is that you have to keep the truck running while you use the compressor.

An air compressor that can be mounted in the bed of the truck or removed and left on site is called a deck mounted compressor.  When you are able to leave the compressor at the job site it saves set up time.  It runs on its own engine, so you your truck doesn’t have to be on to operate the compressor.

Compressors are powered by electricity or gas.  Both types of air compressors store air in a holding tank where it becomes highly compressed.  The compressor is connected to a hose which is connected to the tool it powers.  One of the best air compressor brands available is Quincy.  They carry rotary screw compressors from ten to 350 horsepower.  In addition to their variety Quincy machines are known as high performance, durable machines.  They are also among the quietest running air compressors.  Quincy compressors are available in a wide range of tank sizes and compressor models.

Consider A New Solar Air Compressor

June 7th, 2009

Fossil fuels and the continual burning of electricity have become more and more of an issue in recent times.  While it is great to have electric power, using gas and other fuels deplete our natural supply of fossil fuels.  This creates biohazards and is expending a non-renewable resource.

As more and more people look at ways to reduce dependency on fossil fuels new innovations are being developed.  Viable alternatives to fossil fuels include wind and water power.  Other progress has been made in the use of solar power, such as in the creation of solar powered air compressors.

You’ve probably heard of an air compressor, even if you don’t know exactly what it does.  An air compressor powered by solar power does the same thing as a regular air compressor, but it is powered by the sun instead of fuel or electricity. It may be one to consider instead of just buying any cheap air compressor.

You may realize the importance of this innovation, but still not understand the need for an air compressor.  Air compressors are used to force air into a small tank where it becomes pressurized.  The air is then used to power motors and machinery.  Air compressors are often the very machinery used to drill for oil and gas in areas where no other power is available.  Solar air compressors allow these compressors to be easily powered.

It may seem odd to use solar powered drills to reach fossil fuels, but that’s how it is done.  This use of solar power may only be a small step toward a greener environment; however, it is doing something that counts.  Solar powered air compressors generate power only from the solar panels, so they cannot be run at night.  The best thing about a solar air compressor is that it is green technology and moves us toward greater environmental responsibility.

You probably have no use for a huge solar powered drill, however the same solar concept and circuitry that powers giant drills can be used to power a variety of devices.  Solar technology is currently used to power cell phones and laptops.  You can also purchase small solar air compressors to use on your own home tools and equipment.

The solar power air compressor is much the same as a standard air compressor.  The difference is the sun generates the power.  This makes solar powered air compressors easy to use most anywhere, as long as the sun is shining. You can also buy cheap portable air compressors that are solar powered.

New Leatherman Knives - Product Overview

Crater

Leatherman Knives – Exciting New Products

Leatherman Tool Group has introduced two new folding knife lines, the Crater and Expanse.  Each series is made up of three products that have been designed to replace the existing c, e, k and h-series knives with improvements on the existing features and a more familiar look from model to model.

Handles, Weight and Size

The most obvious difference between the incoming and outgoing ranges is the handles and not just for cosmetic reasons.  Jason Carpenter, Product Manager at Leatherman in Portland, Oregon said of the new range “We had great features in our old knives, but the handles were so thick and bulky just to house them.  Our goal was to lighten up and slim down these new knives while keeping the existing functionality. We also wanted to make sure that they could be more easily identified as being a part of a family.”

The new handles on the Crater knives are solid black, 60% glass filled nylon. Expanse knives feature a combination black and silver handle made from 60% glass filled nylon and reinforced with stainless steel. By improving the handle scale/frame design, engineers were able to make them about 30% lighter and slimmer than their original counterparts.

Blades

Both the series feature 2.6 inch blades, (Crater models) and 3.1 inch blades (Expanse models). Crater series blades are cut from 420HC stainless steel and Expanse series from 154CM. Each knife comes with the option of a straight blade or a combination straight/serrated blade. The combination blade is indicated by an “x” in the model name.

Features

Both series have updated features from the original set of knives. Crater and Expanse series 33 models are all locking liner knives with improved Blade Launcher® technology for quick deployment. The 55 models are all lock back knives with thumb stud deployment. Across both series users will find features like bit drivers, fixed screwdrivers, bit storage in the handle and carabiners that fold away in the handle. All the knives feature a removable pocket clip.

Leatherman Crater Knives and Leatherman Expanse knives are available at Leatherman Store.   For detailed descriptions, comparison charts and information on the latest product releases, please call 0844 5678 123 or email sales@leatherman-store.co.uk.
